Lock Tips

Keeping your home safe and secure often comes down to a handful of tips that I always provide to our locksmith clients in the Toronto area:

Home Lock Safety Tips

Always take the house key with you when leaving the house, even for a short period such as checking the mail. It is not uncommon for a customer to be waiting for a locksmith in their bathrobe because they only went to get the paper.

If the keyhole begins to look rusty or becomes harder to turn, try lubricating it with a spray from any hardware store. Forcing a key to turn may cause the key to break and the key will have to be extracted from the keyhole by a professional locksmith. Any good locksmith should have the locksmith equipment to extract the key, but in some cases the lock itself may need to be replaced.

If you own a locking box, small safe with a key, or have a drawer that locks, never put the key inside the unit. The unit may close and lock the key inside.

Buy the highest level of security that you budget will allow you to do.

Turn off the telephone ringer when you are away from home for an extended period.  An unanswered telephone can signal intruders that no one is home.

Install a 180-degree peephole so that you can see you walkway without opening your door.

Always go to the door when someone rings the door bell.  Old school logic use to be to ignore the door if you are not expecting anybody, however all intruders ring the door to insure that you are not home as most burglars do not want to harm you, they just want to rob you and do not want you to be home, not answering the door can lead to serious confrontations.

Ask to see the identity of someone claiming to be from the utility company.  A legitimate worker will always have proper identification and be pleased to show you.

Have your locks and window checked often to make sure they are locked and secure.  An unlocked basement window can be a easy entry for a looking intruder.

Re-key all you locks immediately if you lose your key.  Pre-Lock Security Locksmiths always recommends high security products like Medeco or Mul-T-Lock to provide proper key control.

Always turn on your security system, even if you are out for only 5 minutes.
